Chanctonbury Probus Club

The Club

'Probus' is a local network of clubs for retired or partially retired professional & business people. The world-wide movement began in England in the mid 1960s and there are now around 2000 clubs throughout the UK.

This club was formed on 23rd February 1995 and the inaugural meeting with 34 founder members was held on 6th April that year.

Out of the current 36 members and 19 associate members three individuals are founder members. The club is a relaxed social fellowship that is non-political and non-sectarian.

Activities were set up to include lunch meetings with speakers; excursions and theatre trips; walks and pub lunches; coffee mornings; as well as specialist social events including golf.

The Chanctonbury Probus Club members mostly live in the Storrington/West Chiltington/Pulborough areas of West Sussex close to the South Downs Chanctonbury Ring, a landmark of beautiful trees on Chanctonbury Hill north of Worthing.

Usually on the first Thursday of the month we hold convivial lunch meetings at the Old Tollgate Hotel at Bramber, near Steyning, where we conduct some business and enjoy presentations from speakers.

Most months we organise club walks in the delightful West Sussex countryside after which a pub lunch is most welcome.

Throughout the year we hold events and occasional day excursions of interest to the club's membership and families, these include theatre trips, visits, ten-pin bowling etc. From time to time trips away for a few days are organised to places of interest in the UK and in mainland Europe.

The Club has an active golfing group with an annual programme of about 6 events held around West Sussex.

The Club activities can be found on the Diary webpages.

We liaise and collaborate with 15 other local West Sussex Probus Clubs - details of those with a website are shown on the 'Useful Links' webpage.
